Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work I go!! Barry is raking and leveling an are that I am going to plant with wheat Julie from work gave me. Under the remay I have planted greens and such.

This is my corn and bean patch. In the distance you can see rhubard and chives and you can barely see the blueberry plants in the back corner. If you look really close at the fence you can see it is down at the front where the bear got in.

I really like Barry's fence posts. Just logs he found in the heaps and heaps of wood on the property. You can see it in the background. Just infront of Barry I am hoping to plant asparagus. I plant seeds in pots and I have 17 plants growing!! Whoopie!!

This is the framing for the shop foundation. It is all ready to go and waiting for the cement truck.

Toby now displays our front garden by the driveway. You cant see a thing but I have planted a few flowers and rhododendrums, peonies, saskatoons, a rose and a dogwood. We'll put our house number on this big rock. And thats all folks.

Wow! We come all this way to visit Nanny and she puts us to work! Child labour!!

Baba took us out to see the creek on their property but instead of letting us wade in the water and look for fish he just took our picture! Baaa Humbug.

Caleb and I are both great speakers. I have to teach him the art of listening now.

I thought I would make sure I was prepared while visiting Nanny and Babba just incase the tide came in more than usual!!

Not only does Caleb not know what organ you listen with, but he also has a habit of looking through the nose piece on his goggles. Sheeesh!! He's my brother, I gotta love him!!

On the farm

Well, it looks like Amber has layed her first egg. Otherwise we had a bird come into the chicken coop and donating this tiny egg!! Only one of my amirylis's bloomed. It grew so tall I thought the flowers would be tiny but they are really big. One is better than none!!

We went to Victoria and stayed with Tom and Dena Rose. We had a lovely time with them. Dena is not doing too well as she needs a hip replacement and has to walk with a cane or walker. She is as cheerful as ever. Tom is now 75!

On Saturday we stopped in to see Barry's mom for the first time. She was very friendly and showed us pictures of her family and told us all about them. Barry has a sister and two brothers and they all live in Victoria.

Since I have nothing new to report I'll post more pictures of my adorable grandsons and their favorite dog poses.

It seems the boys feel that Toby is a warm fuzzy couch at a very convenient hight.

Derek is being very gentle and Toby doesn't seem to mind at all. He looks relieved!!

Toby is just the right fit so it seems to Derek!

Ivy's 91st birthday

It was Ivy Wheatons 91'st birthday on Tuesday so we had everyone over for a sing song. (There are not many friends in Powell River, about 20 of us's) Ivy was looking her wonderful cheerie self and Marylyns friend Nina made a lovely carrot cake.

Oh we miss our little grand boys already. They love to play badmintin and are pretty good players and take turns nicely while Baba throws the birdie!!

Derek loves the snow and would spend the entire day outside. ;)

Lots and lots of snow and its still here. Today we have somemore black clouds coming so we may have another dump. I know this is naughty and we are suppose to dream of white Christmas but I'm kinda tired of it already. Ha!!

Derek loves being out in the snow!!

This is so sweet. Boys are checking on their snowman and watching the birds eat sunflower seeds in the morning. :)

Happyness is a sunny snow covered day!!

Derek is busy making a path around the yard with the snow shovel. Dad and Caleb are testing it out.

Caleb loves hats!! (Except for when he is outside;). This is a toilet paper hat or I suppose it's a cozy crocheted for a the spare toilet paper roll.

Wow!! It's snowing buckets today. In the morning it was so beautiful, Derek and Baba & Nan went out for a walk down the road and Angie raced around in circles. Derek is making a snow angel here and he had to shut his eyes because he says the snow was getting in them.

Caleb was brave enough to go for a ride on the whateveritis. We don't have a hill so Nan had to help out :) It was lots of fun until Angie decided to go for a ride on Calebs lap while eating the mat. Ahhheeee!

Caleb is sitting on a bush in our front garden. He looks so pleased with himself. ;)

Here is our snow man. Derek rolled the bottom ball all on his own. His ball was very big, it came up to his shoulder almost. Baba helped with the rest.

Grand boys visit

Barry likes to hold the ducks but they are not very interested. You can see how big they are getting. It turns out the lady we got them from breeds them for their large size. Oh my!!

Derek and Caleb decided to put their swim trunks on their heads and jump on Nannies bed :)

Poor Toby, I don't know if he will be able to last the whole two weeks with this bunch. Caleb thinks Toby is his own jungle jim and climbs on him every chance he can get. Toby looks very mornful.

We all enjoyed a lovely duet ;)

Derek takes after his Baba. He picked up Amber and took her outside to the chicken house and Amber didn't bat an eyelash. ;)

Ducks again

This is the littlest duck and we think it is probably the only female. Female muscovey ducks are almost half the size of the males. It's strange how they get their feathers mostly on the front of their bodies first. You can see they have down on their backs still.

Oh dear, Ping ate a slug and still has a dirty beak!! ;0

They usually taste everything they see. Here we see they are tasting my shoe and then they tasted my denim skirt too.

This duck is the biggest and tends to sit down a lot. I think I should put him on a diet of greens only. They love to eat chopped lettuce or greens especially dandelions!

The dark feathers on their wings are actually dark green and pretty. :)

I don't know if Christmas cacti are supposed to be blooming now but mine are. These pictures really don't do them justice. They are both so beautiful and yet I ignore them! ;)

This red one I have had for a long time and it has more than 60 blossoms on it. I'm amazed they bloom even though I don't fertilize them or anything. Maybe you need to stress cacti to make them bloom :)

Our ducks (shown here in our green house) are now 5 times the size they were when we got them. They have grown a lot of feathers lately but they are still mostly covered in down.

Here is Andrew and Serena in their very cute costumes. Ann says she found the unicorn outfit at the Ladies Hospital Auxilary. Isn't it cute!! ;) Andrew of course is very spiffie in his fireman outfit!! The hidgeous thing in the back is Stewart!! Ha!

One thing I am very thankful for is people don't molt! My poor hens are so ugly right. They are now the Bare Naked Ladies!!

The duckies are getting so big!! They just had a bath in their drinking water. Yuk.

Edna doesn't look quite as bad as poor Henrietta!!

Soon she will be her beautiful self again. I hope soon anyway as it's starting to get cold out.

They love to go outside and paddle around in a puddle of water!

We have almost doubled our family members. Barry bought four baby Muscovey ducks yesterday. They are only 10 days old!! Here's Baba holding a duckling while Toby sniffes.
We have three brown and yellow and one that is all yellow. I hope we don't end up with all males!

Have you seen the moon lately? Its been so big and beautiful!!
This is our local blue heron. He has been sitting on the pilings most mornings when I go for my walk. :)
The sky was so pretty this morning and the reflection on the water was beautiful. My picture doesn't do it justice. Clouds aren't ususally welcome but they can be pretty.;)

Our newly aquired chicken (we call her little peep but she was dubed Amber of all things) likes to be hand fed blueberries!! I wouldn't share my blueberries with a chicken!! Shes happiest when shes perched on Jeremy's arm.

It was so wonderful to have Danny and the boys visit. I'm not a good grand mom as my camera is still not working properly. It will only let me take one picture and then it quits!!

We have two little bears in our berry patch. It looks like someone cleaned out all the raspberries!! :)
Caleb has found a nice ripe blueberry. You can tell by his face that it's not the first one. ;)
Good thing mom is there to help.
Derek has found a nice juicey ripe one. Ooops I'm still not too good at this but this is a cute picture anyway and I know Grama & Grampa will enjoy them!!

Garden help!

Barry has been helping me with the garden since I'm not able to do much. I was so glad he had some helpers too!! :)

Well, maybe the ladies were more of a bother getting in the way than a help!
We are looking after Amber, the little girl down the streets chicken. I guess you can't see much of her but she has grown. I don't know what we'll do with her when we go off to convention next week. We weren't home when they dropped her off so we didn't get to tell the parents we actually were not going to be home!! What a surprise when we got home and found the chicken. We can't keep her with our chickens because they peck on her. Poor little chicky.

Jer's birthday

It was Jeremy's birthday this week so we had the Falls and Ivy Wheaton over for supper and cake. :) Jeremy got a scookum new camera and forgot to take pictures!!
Nina spent hours picking tiny sweet blackberries to make this wonderful pie and it disappeared in no time at all!!

A little girl from down the street asked if we would babysit her little chicken Amber. Her family were going to Vernon for the weekend so we looked after Amber!!
She was such a cute little chicken ;) When we took her out of her cage she would follow us around the yard as if we were her mom.
I think she was camera shy!! Anyway when we were pulling weeds in the garden she happily gulped down all the bugs and peep peep peeped the whole time:)
Our chickens were too crabby to let Amber stay with them. Chickens have to have a pecking order and Amber was a little too young for that!! The squirells wouldn't take any of that as you can see. The chickens don't eat the barley in their feed so this suites the squirells just fine ;)

Out to the lake

On Sunday Barry and Jeremy hiked to a lake near Sliammon (which is on the way to Lund). I didn't go because I can't walk that far it was a 3/4 mile hike. Anyway it was very beautiful clean for swimming.
Clinton Langill, Falls and Glens went too. This is (from left) Clinton, most of Stewart, Andrew and Nathan, Anne and Jeremy.
Nathan, Robert and Anne are soaking up the sun!!
There was a nice canoe and paddles available so Yuri and Clinton tried it out!!
The lake had some jynormous tad poles and Stewart found one (compliments of Jeremy) in his boot. He hiked back to the car with one shoe off and one shoe on!! Bad Jeremy no biscuit!!

Visit from Danny and grand kids

Danny and my favorite boys came down to stay with us for a week!! Here are our dearies doing something they love. Splashing in the bath and getting water everywhere;)
Another favorite entertainment is to jump on Nanny's bed. This is OK as Nanny is no longer in bed, so the two little monkeys were busy trying to bonk their heads.
Caleb likes to sit on Baba's chair when he listens to Raffi and rock away!
Caleb (with his face covered in blueberry smoothie) climbed Jeremy's book case and gingerly sat on the edge without disturbing a thing! He wondered what all the fuss was about!
The fish tank was very entertaining and thankfully the fish all survived. Caleb was often found dipping his hand in and trying to catch fish!!! I eventually taped it shut.
I didn't get many pictures because my camera died. Ahh Heee :0. We had such a lovely week and my grand sons are so grand and made Nanny feel so much better!!

lot update

This is the house site again and there's only two more trees to take down that you can see and it needs to be leveled.
This is the garden area. Barry has put all the stumps and such next to the property line. I'm not sure I like that but it will grow native plants on it. There was a squirrel running on it already. I hope we didn't destroy his home :< The fruit trees will be to the right. The soil there is black.

Our lot

Barry is out working on our lot clearing and moving piles of debris. This is where our garage is going to be.
Jeremy has been brushing and here he is taking a break to have his lunch in the shade. :)
This is where our house is going to go. The trees will have to be pushed over but otherwise it is quite a nice level site in the sun !!
This is just beside the house area where the garden and fruit trees will be.
This excavator has a thumb and it's just amazing to see it pick up even small pieces of wood. This is the garage site from a differnt angle.

More Myrtle rock adventures

This is an oyster shell with tiny pink whatsits on it :) I haven't a clue.
This of course is a little jelly fish. There were lots of little jelly fish on the beach poor things.
These are tiny little shore birds, about the size of a small sparrow. I think they were feasting on the bullheads because there was thousands of tiny bullheads in the water.
This is a green burrowing anemone. We saw lots of these in the sand but this is the only one you can clearly see the arms of. All the others had folded in their arms and tucked in their sides so you can barely see them. If you touch them they burry themselves further in the sand.
Last but nowhere the least this is part of a California sea cucumber. This story is not for the faint of stomach. We should be genetically engineered with cucumber DNA because these unusual sea creatures have quite a talent. If they are attacked they regurgitate their organs!! The enemy proceeds to eat the organs and the sea cucumber makes a hasty retreat and regrows all its organs!! Ahh Heeee!!

Myrtle rocks

The tide was way out again so Barry and I walked out to Mrytle rock. There was as you can see lots of wild flowers blooming right now, 4 geese, 2 oyster catchers, a large shore bird we have never seen before, a blue heron of course and us!!
These are chocolate lilies and yes they are chocolate color with yellow inside.
I don't know what the blueish purple little flowers are but the pink flowers are wild onions!!
Barry and I think these are monkey flowers but we may be wrong although that is very unlikely!!
More onions on a background of who knows what!!

More on the beach

This poor star fish is upside down. You can see all his little tenticles that he uses to navigate and move food to his mouth which is in the very middle of his body. Star fish are amazingly strong. They can open oyster and clam shells and such.

I'm not sure but I think this is called a leather (oh darn what did I hit) star fish. He's not bumpy like the Purple star fish. I'm not sure what kind of star fish this is at all, I don't think I've seen one before. It was very big 8-10 inches acoss and as you can see brown.
This is a sunflower star one of the biggest sea stars. It can have from six to twenty four legs depending on its age as it gets more legs as it gets older. This star fish looks pretty mushy compared to others. I hope its ok as one that was close by was half eatten by gulls.
Can you see the great blue heron and the Canada goose in the water? Theres also 2 gulls.

On the beach

The tide was incredibly low (0.0) so there was lots to see at the beach. Especially lots of star fish. We don't often see orange star fish but I saw a few this time.
These are sand dollars. The light one is empty but the black ones are still alive. If you look closely at the black ones bottom you can see its tiny hairs on the bottom move.
This is a funny hermit crab. He has grown too big for his borrowed shell so he is having a very hard time hiding on me :) This is an empty moon snail shell. Well it's not empty right now because it has a baby star fish inside!
Moon snails make very unusual nests for their eggs in my opinion. They make a nest of sand and slim in the shape of a toilet plunger. The fist time I ever saw one Jeremy had brought it home from the beach and I gave him such a lecture on bringing home other peoples garbage. Imagine bringing home a toilet plunger!! Ahhh hee!

Spring!!

Jeremy has volunteered to help me plant my garden since I can't lean forward. You can see he also gets a yoga workout!!
Heres Andrew our neighbour riding his bike on our new brick paths. He's not so good on the stairs yet but I'm sure he'll figure them out soon enough!
These beautiful little flowers are growing in our front lawn by the cherry tree. Most of our lawn needs cutting but its hard to cut all these lovely flowers too so we just have a natural yard and let God orchestra it!!
We went for a lovely walk behind our house and there were so many wild bleeding hearts and miners lettuce blooming, they became carpets of flowers among the ferns ;)

Truck repairs

Poor Baba! Hi's truck needs repairs and they are very hard to do with hand tools on an old seized up truck. Baba and Jeremy spent an hour working on one bolt and just got it loosend :<

It's been very cold out in the morning especially but we have had lots of sun this week :). Jeremy and Toby are basking in the sun after walking to the beach.
We are still having some tremendously low tides. I thought the mountains on Vancouver Island were so beautiful Thursday. Now that our neighbour has cut down some of his trees we actually can see the mountains from upstairs but I went down to the beach to get a better look!! It's so sad so many people are planting trees and preserving trees but it seems in Powell River people don't like trees and lately a lot have been cut down needlessly. So many people don't realize trees breath in carbon dioxide all day and breath out oxygen all night, they also retain moisture and are great at wind and noise control!
Barry is working at the top of the world again. Actually he is at the end of Hwy 101 near Lund. He,s clearing land and building a road for a new subdivision of 9 - 5acre lots. This is a small part of the view the owner will have from his new house.
This is more of the view, it goes on almost 360. Barry felt bad because on Thurday the mountains were gold but he of course didn't have the camera. He also saw the biggest black bear he has ever seen yesterday in this area but by the time he was brave enough to get the camera and step outside the truck the bear saw him and took off like a bullet!! He saw another bear this week on his way to work. It was eating grass on the side of the road total oblivious to all who passed by, grazing like a cow. Well maybe it was a sow!!

Tide

The tide goes way out lately. If I didn't have a back ache I could walk out to the island and see if the wild onions or chocolate lilies are blooming. Well maybe soon! We are pretty lucky to be having sun because it looks like its raining on Texada!
Toby knows its spring but no one told him it's still cold out. He's going fishing anyway!!
Can you see the blue heron eyeing Toby? I need to get a photo program for changing photos and bringing pictures closer. Any suggestions?

Saturday

Jeremy has a new hobby and we are not going to disswade him from it. It's brick laying and he's good at it. Here you see he is cutting the bricks with a fancy machine to fit in the small spaces left after careful placement of all the full size bricks.
Here's a new path he just made with some left over bricks I had and the grey middle is actually a large block.
Almost the end of a project Barry and I started maybe 5 years ago!! Ha!!
I had to put in this picture of my 3 chickens having a dust bath. I hope Derek and Caleb enjoy it. The hens sure enjoyed the bath!! You can see the one in the front has her eyes closed!

Sunday

Ooops! I ment to do Saturday first!! Anyway Sunday Michael one of my brothers visted us from Edmonton. He was so glad to see green!! Green grass, green shrubs and bushes. Everything in Edmonton is still brown or white. We had a beautiful day, we had lunch and talked and went for a walk on Palm beach (darn I forgot the camera) it was very beautiful. We showed Michael all the wonderful sights in Powell River and our new lot!!

Back yard

Our back yard is nothing to write home about but right now it is covered in english daisys!! I don't know why people want lush green lawns that are so toxic to the earth and take a lot of time and effort to look after. I was reading an article in a magazine that said home owners use more chemicals and fertilzer (not to mention water) on their lawns than we use in agriculture. Thats tremendous considering the run off from farms along the Mississippi causes a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico every summer that is 8,500 sq. miles. I just read that in a kids book called Oceans Atlas. We as individuals can make a difference!! Besides food and flowers are useful!!
